Vodafone wins round against iPhone in Germany

Опубликовано admin 21.11.2007

PARIS: Last month, Apple was forced by French law to promise that consumers could buy a version of its much-hyped iPhone here without having to be locked into a long-term contract with Orange, the only mobile phone operator offering the new device.

Now, the same issue is tripping up Apple's plans to sell the music-playing cellphone in Germany, the largest European telephone market.

If you are going to check bags, a few suggestions:

Be early. Lots of bags don't make the flight because they are checked in late, or barely on time, when security areas and airline bag operations are being overwhelmed on busy travel days.

Fed pares U.S. growth forecast and describes October rate cut as ‘close call’

Опубликовано admin 21.11.2007

WASHINGTON: Policy makers at the Federal Reserve expect the U.S. economy to keep expanding over the next year, but they have lowered their forecasts and are much more uncertain about the outlook than just four months ago, the central bank reported Tuesday.

In the debut of an effort to describe its internal thinking more openly, the Fed unveiled a detailed forecast that summarizes the views as well as the disagreements among the Fed's governors and regional bank presidents.

The new forecasts show much lower expectations of growth, and a much greater uncertainty about those expectations, than policy makers had as recently as June.

Fed expects U.S. economic slowdown to deepen

Опубликовано admin 21.11.2007

WASHINGTON: The Federal Reserve expects economic growth to slow sharply next year, and policy makers there are worried that even this forecast may prove too optimistic, according to an assessment that the central bank released on Tuesday.

In a new effort to be more open, the Fed released a detailed forecast that summarized the predictions of the Fed governors and regional bank presidents.

It also reported their disagreements, which almost all centered on how much the broad economy is likely to be damaged by the surge in oil prices and the tight credit markets brought on by the recent severe problems in housing and mortgage lending.

At the same time, Fed officials expect unemployment to rise only slightly and inflation to edge down.

The Federal Reserve reported Tuesday that it expects slower U.S. economic growth and a slight bump up in unemployment next year due to the housing slump and a credit crunch. The board also said, however, that it thinks inflation will remain moderate.

Опубликовано admin 21.11.2007

CHICAGO: Every big U.S. airline says it is working hard to improve baggage handling.

So far this year, every one of them is failing.

One in every 138 checked bags went missing during the first nine months of this year, compared with one in 155 bags a year earlier.

Airlines point out that those results indicate a success rate of more than 99 percent.
